A New Era
After the Trail of Tears took place, it made a significant impact on the country and the Native Americans who were able to survive the deadly march. Although many natives stayed on the reserves, as the years passed, they slowly began to leave when laws changed. The Native Americans now have the right to live anywhere. There are now more than half a million Indians in the United States and millions more elsewhere in the Americas, a significant change from the small handful we saw right after the Trail of Tears. As the population grew, some natives were able to make money off of oil and other natural resources on their lands. Many were even relocated to work in cities and manufacture goods. Unfortunately, a little over half of the population live in poverty, with just barely enough money to get by. There is still a small portion of the population though, who have clung to the reservations like glue, unwilling to make any changes to how they live in their lives.
An example of a successful Native American is Joseph Burton, who was a basketball player at Beavers College and broke the record with over 1,000 points scored, 700 rebounds, and 300 assists. Another example is Commander John Bennett Herrington of the Chickasaw Nation who was the first Native American in space. These people serve as role models in Native American history and their long battle towards freedom.
